SWOT Analysis – Bangladesh

Strengths

Weaknesses

Good Form: Bangladesh have won 17 matches since the last year. They were undefeated in the recently concluded tri series (WI, IRE, BAN). In December 2018 they defeated West indies in a bilateral ODI series (2-1). Before that they managed to reach in the final of the Asia Cup 2018 after defeating much fancied Pakistan.

Tamim and Shakib: In Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al-Hasan Bangladesh possess two players who are up there with the best. Shakib is also the no 1 all-rounder in the ICC rankings capable of winning matches through bat or ball.

Ineffective Middle Order: Middle order batsmen of Bangladesh since the CWC 2015 have scored only 5973 runs which is the 2nd lowest among the current 10 WC teams. The middle order strikes at 85.42 which is the second worst among the 10 teams contesting this World Cup.

Spinning Concerns:  Shakib is the only Bangladesh spinner who can consistently take wickets, the rest of the spinners are inexperienced or inconsistent.

Opportunities

Threats

Chance to reach first ever Semi-finals: In the last World Cup (2015), Bangladesh managed to reach the quarterfinals. In the 2017 Champions Trophy, they reached the Sem-finals. The 2019 World Cup offers the chance for Bangladesh to reach their first World Cup Semi-final.

Tamim in World Cups: Tamim Iqbal’s ODI record and his World Cup performance is a huge contrast. In 21 matches in the World Cup he averages just 23 with no hundreds and 3 fifties.

Injury Concerns: Shakib, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain and skipper Mashrafe Mortaza all are coming on the back of just recovering from injuries. If any one of the above suffers a relapse, then the Tigers will suffer.

Pace Concerns: Mustafizur Rahman as mentioned above is coming on the back of an ankle sprain and is not effective as he broke through. Mashrafe Mortaza due to injuries and advancing age is also not the same bowler. With the lack of quality emerging fast bowlers Bangladesh will hope Mashrafe Mortaza and Mustafizur fire.
