SWOT Analysis – England

Strengths

Weaknesses

Destructive Batting: Since Morgan has taken over England arguably have the most destructive batting line-up. The likes of Root, Bairstow and Buttler are averaging above 50 post CWC 2015, on the other hand players like Stokes, Morgan and Jason Roy are averaging in the 40s post CWC 2015. They possess 6-7 batsman capable of blowing teams away single handedly.

Depth in Batting and Bowling: Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali have proven themselves with bat and ball. The presence of 3 all-rounders give England depth while batting and options while bowling.]

Secondary Spinner: Adil Rashid has been in tremendous form over the last couple of years (he took England’s first 5-for in 2019). But to assist him, there is no quality secondary spinner. Moeen Ali has had decent numbers in the last couple of years, Joe Denly is at best a part-timer.

Expensive bowling: England’s bowlers are picking up wickets regularly but at an expense. England have scored big, but their bowlers have borne the brunt of flat pitches. Recently West Indies and even Pakistan regularly scored around 350 highlighting England’s bowling struggles which led them to fast tracking Jofra Archer in the World Cup squad.

Opportunities

Threats

End the Jinx: England have been runners-up thrice in the World Cup and have reached the semi-finals twice. Given that they have won the most matches post CWC 2015 and the fact that the World Cup is at home this is a huge opportunity to break their World Cup jinx.

Adil Rashid: Adil Rashid since World Cup 2015 has been England’s premier strike bowler. On in effective flat pitches, Rashid has regularly provided the breakthroughs. The World Cup at home offers him a chance to become a superstar.

Unfavorable Conditions: England in the last 2-3 years have batted on flat tracks at home, which has helped the current players to perform exceedingly well. However, time and again England have struggled in conditions not suited for their aggressive game. Champions Trophy Semi-final a big example.

Stokes Form: Ben Stokes has been one of England’s major players capable of changing the course of the match with bat or ball. But off late the all-rounder has struggled for form with bat and ball enduring a mediocre IPL season with Rajasthan Royals.
